.) 07/14/08 Hi
Bobcats! Hey the soccer reunion is just around the corner! Just over 2 months
away! Sept 19-21. Sherm got us a block of 20 rooms discounted and reserved
for us at the O.U. Inn. The room rate is $95 plus tax, etc = $107/night. The
rooms need to be reserved 3 weeks in advance (by Aug 29) to get our special rate.
Other wise the rate is $169. When you call tell them it's the "soccer reunion"
rooms to get the special rate. The weekend events haven't been totally planned
but it sounds like we might do something like 3 years ago. Maybe an initial
reception at the O.U. Inn Friday evening. Then maybe have breakfast together
Saturday morning at the Inn or somewhere else. And we could have a lot of free
time Saturday although it might be fun to have a tour of campus. I think Sherm
called the Alumni Office for things to do. Sherm, what did you find out? Do
we want to have another scrimmage? That could be Saturday mid afternoon like last
time. Gary Statham said he'd organize another party for Saturday night. Or
we could meet uptown at a restaurant/bar and party there. Mike Ley told me a relative
of his has some connections. And we could get together again for Sunday breakfast. There's
also a women's varsity soccer game Friday at 4pm against Xavier and Sunday at
1pm against Marshall. What other things can we do as a group? Dig out your
old soccer photos and scrapbooks even if you brought them 3 years ago. And
scan in a few old photos and email them to me. I could use some new archival photos
here. Also, send me an update of your bio and I'll add it to the website. If
you haven't given me a bio ever, please email me one. And you can send me recent
(or not so recent) photos of you mountain climbing in Nepal or surfing in Hawaii,
etc. and I'll post it on your bio page. Go Bobcats! Hugh 301-221-8357
Here's
from the 2005 reunion: What
a memorable weekend! It was great to see everyone again and renew old friendships
and recall some terrific times in all of our lives. The muscle aches are still
lingering after a week from our game. ( I've got to be in better shape before
next time). It was worth it nonetheless. I agree, let's do it again in a couple
of years, even before five. Thanks so much to Gary, Hugh, Peter, Don, Sherm for
putting forth the effort to make the reunion happen. Take care all. Eric
It
was an awesome weekend, I can't wait to do it again in five years, wish it was
sooner. My wife wanted to write her impressions of this past weekend which
I thought was a good idea to get a spouses view point after finally meeting all
of these guys that I have been talking about for years. I will probably send some
input as well.
a great memorable weekend. Sherm
A
Wife's View on the OU Soccer Reunion
I
knew your names. I had seen your pictures. I had heard some stories.
but
I never fully realized the depth of your accomplishments and experiences and the
resulting bond that was forged until this past weekend. How very fortunate you
are to have played on a team that produced winnings scores, indelible memories
and resulted in lifelong friendships. It was amazing and rather touching to watch
all of you get reacquainted and then, almost instantly, slip into a comfort zone
that only comes when you have shared history. You were all wonderful both on and
off the field then and you certainly are now. I
loved meeting each of you and your wives/significant others. I loved the 110
Marching Band and the football game. I loved the exciting 2 - 2 soccer match! I
loved the Saturday evening adventure in the country including the strobe light
dancing! Thanks
for a wonderful weekend! Beth

A
weekend that exceeded expectations
.who would've ever thought we could've
had such a turnout for the reunion
from New England, middle Atlantic, Midwest,
southeast all making the effort and expense for nostalgia and reconnection
I
am so sore from playing I can hardly move
The drive back was fast as the
flood of memories and satisfaction of learning how we all turned out easily distracted
the boredom of travel
Tiff, thanks for the photograph - that was a great
touch
.I am sure we all have thought on more than one occasion about the
guys who were such an important piece of a critical time in our lives
.I
can only say that I am grateful that the planets aligned in such a way to put
all of us together at that place
at that time
to play that game
Much
of what we are today are reflections of what we were then
and somehow, we
all came out all right
I echo what Hugo said in his email received when we
all got home
I love all you guys and hope we all can maintain some semblance
of contact until the next reunion
Sherm, I'll see you Thursday; Ernie, see
you at NSCAA in January
Any everyone else
we all have your number so
you never know when you will get a call. -Don
What
an incredible thrill to see you guys again. I'm sorry I did not get to play Sat
morn. but next time (at 61????) I'm going to play!! At least my heart and mind
want to..... My only hope is that other guys will be able to join us and enjoy
what we did. The whole weekend went way to fast, but it was truely priceless.
Having Tiff show up was special too. He really hasn't changed from the first year
he started. And how appropriate to have a party at the wrong house! It didn't
matter, it was still us and that's where the magic came from. You guys were/are
important in my life beyond your imagination. I'm still very proud to be a part
of that group. Thanks, Tom Beach
...unfortunately,
I was far too successful in the Saturday scrimmage fro my own good, in my own
mind at least, and can't resist the urge to want to break the tie. I know I should
thank my lucky stars that I'm still able to walk. But hey - And for those
of you who had a chance to watch the OU girl's volleyball - how sweet was that
spandex? So how about next year?
.the other point is that scrimmaging,
and perhaps more importantly, getting in shape for the scrimmage, is good for
us. That was the highlight of the weekend for me - doing together what we did
so well so many years ago. The longer we wait, the less inclined we'll be to be
able to scrimmage. -Jay
Ticket
to Athens: $200 Night at the Inn: $150 Seeing you guys again after all these
years: Priceless. Obviously, we were part of something great thirty plus
years ago - the most successful soccer era in Ohio University history.
a
wonderful and memorable weekend that each of us will never forget. Best
wishes, Dave Frishberg
Jody
and I had a great time seeing everyone and talking about old and new times. I
felt the weekend was planned perfect as you had time with the group and had some
on your own time. The best part was building the relationships that we lost
over the years. It was so much fun catching up with everyone. Maybe we should
do this in 3 years and double our numbers. Had a great time and it was good
to see all the guys and spouses. Ken and Jody Rusche
I
just wanted to say that the 600+ mile drive from Canada to see you, Ken and
the players involved with the '70 and '71 teams was well worth the drive... -Tiff
Yes, it was a weekend to relish and remember for sure. Glad we finally found the
right house and didn't all end up in the clink!
.It
was so great to see everyone after 30+ years. After the initial "recognition"
period during cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on Friday evening, it was almost like
a 30 year flashback - personalities, voices, even playing styles hadn't changed
a bit - just a little slower! The mix of scheduled activities (the hotel reception
and meals were great) and free time was perfect and the Saturday night party at
not one, but two, farmhouses was a trip. In summary, I think Gary had the
statement of the week when he wrote - WE MUST BE REATRDED FOR WAITING SO LONG!
Let's do it again soon while we still can. -Peter
Wow!
What a weekend together! I'm glad the 1st farm house was locked so we didn't
end up "partying" all over the inside of the house! For those of you
who didn't make the reunion, we were invited to a friend of Gary Statham's in
the county for Saturday night. To make a long story short, we went to the wrong
house and the owners were not there! After about an hour of partying on the outdoor
porch, we discovered we were supposed to be at the farm house several hundred
yards away! I was really sore even just playing as goalie in our pick-up game.
Didn't know how much work it would be. Driving home Sunday, I was really sore!
I went to the gym Monday and burned up some of the lactic acid and felt alot better. I
enjoyed showing my wife Susie the campus. It was her 1st visit and my 1st visit
since the early '80's. I liked seeing all the new buildings and wandering around
town and showing Susie where I lived, especially West Washington St and 18 Oak
St. Fun seeing a women's volleyball game. They were great! After the reunion,
I felt a real let-down thinking I wouldn't see most of you guys for 5 years! How
does a reunion in 2 or 3 years sound? I thought at first every 5 years was right
but I guess that is just the norm for high school and college reunions. But since
we're not an organized O.U. reunion, we can have it whenever we want. -Hugh
